New Mexico is a land of extremes... It varies from dusty dry deserts that are as flat as a tortilla to soaring magestic mountains and towering rock formations of every shape and hue. While lakes and rivers make up less than a quarter of a percent of it's vast area, there is still enough water  to support a thriving enthusiasm for fishing, boating and... believe it or not... scuba diving! The wide variation in the landscape has been responsible for New Mexico's nickname of "The Land of Enchantment", and I must admit that in the past six years, it has managed to cast its enchanting spell upon me.

An odd "quirkiness" permeates the entire state. The geological formations and vegetation would be right at home in a science fiction movie. The architecture ranges from quaint traditional adobe and mission-style homes to structures that look more like gigantic abstract sculptures rather than habitable domiciles. The exotic flavor most definitely extends to the states fiery cuisine as the ubiquitous chile manages to infiltrate every food imaginable, even ice cream. As for the inhabitants of this unique land, the people out here are the friendliest I have ever met. A typical New Mexican thinks nothing of strolling up to a perfect stranger and starting up a conversation or regaling them with their personal life-history at the drop of a hat... a Stetson of course!

New Mexico sometimes seems like it's been caught in a time-warp, still reveling in the raucous days of the Wild West. There is an ornery frontier mentality that simply refuses to die... with or without its boots on. It all comes as quite a culture-shock for an "Easterner", who cannot help but conclude that New Mexico is not just another state... it's another state of mind.

This collection of short, humorous vignettes and wry observations aptly illustrates what happens when an east coast 'Jersey Girl' moves to the wild west.
